Sawadee... Thailand in 2006

It's our first time to Thailand and we were quite excited. This was our second travel for the year having been to Australia in March. That meant we only had around 4 months to prepare, unpack, repack, and get going.

Our Thailand trip was from July 15 to 23, which gave us around 8 days (excluding arrival and departure) to explore the city sights and nearby provincial attractions. We booked Jetstar for this trip.

For the first leg of the trip, we stayed at Viengtai Hotel for 2 nights at $115 (booked thru STA Travel). The hotel was conveniently located close to most of the historical places in Bangkok and the famous Khao San Rd. It was a simply decorated hotel (undergoing some renovations during that time) with basic in-room amenities.

Our first adventure was to the nearby town of Kanchanaburi. We booked a full-day private tour online. This cost USD210 for the family, with a tour guide and private van which took us around Kanchanaburi's finest attractions - Erawan Falls, Elephant Camp, historical Railway, River Kwai.

The following day, we walked to nearby attractions like the Grand Palace complex and glimpsed on the Temple of Dawn.

For the second leg of our trip, we transferred to Novotel Bang-na, quite far from the main city. Hubby attended a conference in the vicinity and so we didn't really have much time to go out. The kids and I stayed most of the 4 days in the hotel - enjoying the pool and the food.

On the final leg of our trip, we transferred to Bangkok Palace Hotel (booked thru STA Travel) for our last night. The hotel cost $60 for a family room. From here we were able to visit Chatuchak and MBK, famous shopping places in Bangkok.

Here were some of the highlights of our Thailand holiday.

riding full grown Thai elephants

cruising along River Kwai on a bamboo raft while it was drizzling

walked through the historial Bridge over the River Kwai

taking a dip at one of the lagoons of Erawan Falls

an Amazing Race-like experience at the Temple of the Reclining Buddha

my ever favorite Thai fried rice - can't get enough of it!

We loved the adventure, and the food. Can't wait to visit Thailand again and explore the other provinces and attractions they have to offer.
